What's This?

A new respiratory virus has been found in the UK and the middle east (Saudi IMG_0159Arabia, Qatar, Jordan) that is in the same family of viruses as SARS.  Numbers are still small (14 people diagnosed, 13 deaths since April 2012), but the CDC wants to educate the public.

What you need to know:

  • Don’t change any travel plans (you can still visit these countries and shouldn’t cancel any plans)
  • If you’re going to countries in or near the middle east, watch for symptoms of fever, shortness of breath, or cough.  If you develop these, see a physician before traveling further (or before getting on a plane, to avoid spreading it to others)
  • To protect yourself:
    • wash hands often with soap and water, and use hand sanitizer if they’re not available
    • avoid touching eyes/nose/mouth
    • make sure your vaccinations are all up-to-date
    • avoid people who have the above symptoms
